East L.A. College and Cinema Without Borders Plan French Animation Celebration Day 

The Ninth annual East L.A. College International Animation Day Festival will spotlight French Animation on May 19.  Organized by ELAC and Cinema Without Borders in cooperation with the Consulate General of France (L.A.), L’Agence du Court Métrage and Sony Classic Pictures, the afternoon event will feature a panel discussion, tributes and screenings of award-winning animated shorts.

The animation celebration will begin with remarks by Linda Kallan (Chair of ELAC’s Art Department  and Bijan Tehrani (Celebration Director and Editor in Chief of Cinema Without Borders), followed by a screening of French animated shorts:

  • Empty Places (director: Geoffroy de Crécy, 2020)
  • Mild Madness, Lasting Lunacy (Marine Laclotte, 2020)
  • Genius Loci (Adrien Merigeau, 2019)
  • Logorama (François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy, Ludovic Houplain, 2009)
  • The Monk and the Fish (Michaël Dudok de Wit, 1994)
  • The Night of the Plastic Bags ( Gabriel Harel, 2018)
  • The Little Dragon (Bruno Collet, 2009) 

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring DreamWorks animation artist Patrick Mate (Puss in Boots), Oscar-nominated director Julian Bocabeille (Oktapodi), Yegane Moghaddam (Oscar-nominated director of Our Uniform), former Animation Magazine and AWN editor-in-chief Sarah Baisley and ELAC animation instructor Mike Libonati.

A spotlight on the career of Patrick Mate, French/American animation artist and DreamWorks veteran who has worked on feature such as Puss in Boots, Shrek Forever After, Monsters vs. Aliens, Bee Movie, Flushed Away, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Road to El Dorado and The Prince of Egypt and a tribute to the work of Oscar-nominated director Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) will conclude the afternoon celebration.
